The journey behind Ottawa's first social network
Last updated: January 2025
As someone who is born and raised in Ottawa, I noticed that over the past few years, there was a consistent rhetoric being pushed about Ottawa: it's boring. There's nothing to do, nowhere to go, and nobody new to hang out with.
This was something that even I, originally believed. However, after truly seeing what Ottawa has to offer, I knew that this wasn't true something was missing. Despite being Canada's capital and home to incredible local businesses, hidden gems, and vibrant communities, there wasn't a dedicated space for the people of Ottawa to truly connect and share what makes our city special.
I saw friends constantly asking "where should we go for dinner?" or "what's happening this weekend?" in group chats. I watched amazing local businesses struggle to reach their community. I realized that Ottawa needed something built specifically for us — by someone who understands what makes this city unique.
That's when the idea for Flopp was born. Not another generic social platform, but Ottawa's first ever social network, designed from the ground up to help locals discover, connect, and make the most of everything our amazing city has to offer.
I envision Ottawa as a city where no great restaurant goes undiscovered, no amazing event flies under the radar, and no resident feels disconnected from their community. Flopp is my attempt to bridge that gap.
My vision is simple: create a platform where every Ottawa resident — whether you've lived here for decades or just moved to the city — can easily discover the best spots, connect with like-minded locals, and share authentic experiences that help our entire community thrive.
I believe that when locals have a dedicated space to share their favorite hidden gems and genuine experiences, everyone benefits. Local businesses get more visibility, residents discover amazing places they never knew existed, and our city becomes more connected and vibrant.
Make Ottawa fun again. That's not just our tagline — it's our core mission.
I'm building Flopp to solve real problems I see in our community:
Ottawa is incredible. We have aamzing restaurants, beautiful outdoor spaces, rich cultural experiences, and some of the most interesting people in Canada. But for too long, we've relied on generic platforms that treat our city like any other place.
Other cities have their dedicated platforms and communities. Ottawa deserves that too. We deserve a space built specifically for our unique culture, our distinct neighborhoods, our local businesses, and our community needs.
Flopp isn't trying to compete with global social networks. We're building something different — something local, authentic, and designed specifically for the people who call Ottawa home.
This is just the beginning. I'm committed to growing Flopp into the essential platform for Ottawa community life. Here's where we're heading:
My goal is simple: make Flopp so useful and authentic that it becomes an essential part of living in Ottawa. I want every resident to feel more connected to their city and their community because of what we're building together.
Building Ottawa's first social network isn't something I can do alone. It requires input, feedback, and genuine participation from the community we're serving.
Whether you're a longtime Ottawa resident with decades of local knowledge, a newcomer looking to connect, a local business owner wanting to reach your community, or someone who simply believes Ottawa deserves better — I want to hear from you.
Let's make Ottawa fun again.
